Today marks Major League Baseball’s 21st Jackie Robinson Day celebration and Nike came prepared with a special-edition sneaker, one which quickly sold out from the brand’s online store.
A “Jackie Robinson Day” Nike Cortez was released today on SNKRS for $100. The “Photon Dust/Black/Metallic Silver/Gym Red” colorway takes on the appearance of a baseball with a light-colored nylon and suede upper. A black leather Swoosh is bordered by metallic silver, which also appears on a tongue badge bearing Robinson’s jersey number, 42. The heel features baseball-like red stitching with Robinson’s number, which is also featured in a repeating multicolor pattern on the insole.
In addition to the Cortez, Nike has also prepared a Jackie Robinson Day-themed version of Ken Griffey Jr.’s Griffey 2 MCS cleats. The cleats were slated to be released today but as of publishing, have yet to appear for sale. Several players including Elly De La Cruz of the Cincinnati Reds are expected to wear the cleats today.
The annual Jackie Robinson Day event honors Robinson on the day the sports pioneer played his first major league game. The first Black MLB player of the modern era, Robinson made history in 1947 when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers at the team’s Ebbets Field stadium. Each year, players, managers, coaches, and umpires league-wide wear Robinson’s jersey number to honor his legendary impact on the game.
Nike frequently releases themed sneakers for the event including an Air Max 1 in 2024.
While the “Jackie Robinson Day” Nike Cortez has sold out, the brand has other commemorative product available including T-shirts and jerseys. For those who have their heart set on the Cortez, the sneaker can be purchased now on resale platforms including GOAT and StockX.
