RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot and wounded by campus police in a neighborhood behind the University of California, Riverside, had two firearms and another weapon described as an improvised firearm.

The Riverside Police Department says it received multiple calls about shots fired around 12:55 a.m. Sunday and a student worker at the campus also reported the gunshots to university police.

City police say that UC officers were first to spot the man and the shooting occurred when he produced a firearm.

The man was hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities say no officers or bystanders were harmed, and because the shooting occurred off campus, no students, faculty or staff were affected.
